Easy Steps to Put Your Link Building Campaign in Action

Building links to and from your site is a large part of search engine optimization. Googlebots, the computer programs that crawl and index websites, know what to crawl partly because of links.

There are two kinds of links – outbound and inbound. Outbound links are easy to control, as they go from your site to other sites on the Web. Inbound links, those that point from other sites to your site, are harder to achieve. Inbound links are also more important in Google’s ranking algorithm; more inbound links from respected sources means more trust built for your website.

A successful link building campaign is one of the most important search engine optimization services that SEO firms offer. Your SEO expert can help you design a link building campaign that meets your needs and your budget.

Turning SEO Link Building into SEO Audience Targeting with Twitter profiling

Admit it. You’ve sat in a meeting with your SEO Agency and thought, “surely, this shouldn’t work”. Endless, near irrelevant “guest posts” at best, “article submission” and “directory link building” at the very worst.

For the past decade, “SEO” and “Marketing” have been allowed to remain almost entirely different disciplines. With a few exceptions, the vast majority of the SEO industry has been allowed to stumble along without a second thought to who they are targeting, where those people might be, and how best to reach them.

Today, I want to share a combination of a few simple tools that actually help us identify our target audience, show us who might be influencing them and how to identify what content those influencers share. Why? We’re trying to reach people. What better way than to do it in a targeted, data driven way. SEO has finally arrived at the intersection between search engine rankings and real marketing. Social Media happens to be the key that has opened the door, and finally, it’s our job to catch the attention of a real audience. Here’s how to turn SEO link building into real audience targeting with Twitter profiling.

Co-citation & SEO Link Building: Reaction to SEOmoz’s Whiteboard Friday

As a recovering academic (with a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, I was originally going to be a professor ~ go figure), co-citation is actually something I had heard of before. Co-citation in academic circles has to do with whether an article is widely referenced or not. If you are working for UC Berkeley and writing a paper on whether or not there is life on Mars, and your academic article gets cited not just in a few journals but in many, and if those journals are considered reputable (Yale being better than the University of Phoenix), and if the citations are relevant… you are being effectively co-cited. That’s good. That means your important.

As a teacher of SEO Courses, this thought pattern leads one right into link building. Get many links (a.k.a., votes), get votes from more reputable (higher PageRank) sites, and get votes from sites that are in your keyword community (a.k.a., relevant). That’s what traditional link-building is all about.

So What’s Co-citation and How does it Impact SEO?

So what’s co-citation in terms of SEO link building? I am a faithful fan of SEOmoz’s Whiteboard Friday, which is a video series on SEO by the super nerds at SEOMoz (that’s a term of endearment). The last episode was on ‘co-citation and search engine optimization,’ namely link building or backlink analysis. What gives?

Link Building

Traditional link building depending on what school of SEO you graduated from involved a series of meticulous tasks to get back links from websites that were relevant to your niche or market. The basics of link building for SEO

What is link building?

Link building involves developing inbound links to your website that help your website rankings and send traffic directly to your site. However, link building is about quality, not quantity. Yes, you can go out and find thousands of places to leave your links, but if those sites are irrelevant or not well ranked themselves, your links will be worthless. The trick is to leave links on websites that are relevant to your business (so you get targeted traffic) and recognised by the search engines to be of good quality themselves.

Where should you start building links to your website?

As we mentioned above, there are plenty of “link farms” – sites that are basically a huge directory of links to websites. These sites used to be quite useful for SEO but Google now knows that their sole purpose is to host inbound links so those links no longer carry any weight. Instead, you need to look for relevant, high quality sites where leaving links is a more “natural” thing to do. The best places to leave your links are forums, blogs, social media sites (in your profile and your updates), review sites, bookmarking sites such as Digg or StumbleUpon, wikis and local directories. We’ll look at each of these type of site in a future post.
