Google Analytics Workshop (Part 1): Setting Up Goals
Once you determine your goal(s), you must define it in analytics. However, keep in mind, goals are set at the profile level, and are limited to 20 goals per profile. Each profile has a four set goal limit, and each set can have up to five goals – totaling 20 goals.

Man stands at the front and announces a new feature, typically punctuated by ‘super-awesomes’, ‘game-changers’ and ‘next levels’. We whoop and clap, everyone feels good…… several months later we realise a lot of the shiny stuff was exactly that – shiny but not very useful.
This time we have the same man, the same whooping (even from the Brits), but you know what, they really are announcing a big list of super-awesome game changers. I’m not kidding, they are taking Google Analytics to the next level. These changes come under the broad title of ‘Universal Analytics’.
You should be able to see from this blog post how excited we are about these changes, and how big a deal they are. Expect some more in-depth articles on many of these upcoming features in the future. We’ll let you know expected launch dates when we can share them and will explain how to make the most out of these changes.
3 Tips for Google Analytics Success
Getting the basics down regarding Google Analytics can be overwhelming even for seasoned veterans. By keeping in mind some best practices, you’ll be able to better utilize the capabilities of Google Analytics and cater to your particular needs. Take a look at some of the best practices we recommend below.
If you haven’t already, update to the asynchronous Google Analytics before the closing </head> tag. This new version allows for easy-to-implement event tracking and earlier load time. If you have multiple subdomains with multiple profiles, be sure to set-up a catch-all profile with no filters or exclusions. This is recommended in case there are any issues with the other profiles – if needed you can do a little digging and get the same profile information in a crunch from that catch-all. Exclude your network or internal traffic from tracking with Analytics. Surprisingly enough, internal traffic can skew the data significantly. This can be done at the domain level or a range of IPs.
When looking at your Analytics data, be sure to include annotations. If there was a spike in traffic and you can attribute it to an email blast for instance, then be sure to note it. Chances are you aren’t the only one looking in the Analytics account. By including annotations you eliminate any confusion and can see who added a particular annotation.

In the past when you wanted to do good analytics for your website you would have to buy some very expensive tools. What is great about Google is that they produced a free tool, Google Analytics, that provide high-end analytics – not only for your website but for your social media activity too.
Google Analytics allows you to find out where people come to your site from, what is it they are doing when they get there and most importantly what the outcome of their visit was. One feature that is extremely useful is the Bounce Rate. What this does is show you how many people came to your site and left without clicking on a single thing; meaning that you might have a bad landing page.

Setting up Goals in Google Analytics
There is a lot of confusion around goal tracking and funnels in Google Analytics. True, these can get fairly complex, but the most common website goals are actually very easy to track (if you already have Google Analytics tracking all of your pages). All you are doing is counting your “thank you”s.
All of these typically take people to a “thank you” page after completion. This is a good practice to let the visitor know their action was successfully competed on the back end. This also makes it very easy to track how many people complete these actions by tracking how many unique visitors arrive at the thank you page. (We can assume that if someone made it to a page thanking them for their donation that means they made a donation.)
